Use the contents table below to jump to the stage of the course creation roadmap that is most relevant to you.
The Roadmap
Step One - Strategy
While it can be really tempting to jump straight into creating content and building workbooks, the strategy section will save you countless hours down the track.
In the strategy section we work out the who, what, where and why of your course. The time you spend here helps lay the groundwork for a great course that really helps your audience and creates real impact.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Who is this course for?
- What specific audience do you want to help?
- What challenges or goals does this audience have?
- What transformation will this course provide?
- Where will they be after taking your course?
- What specific outcomes or results can they expect?
- How will this course fit into your business?
- Is it a signature offer, a lead-in product, or a bonus?
- How does it align with your other services or products?
Understanding the strategy of why you are creating a course and what it will achieve is the groundwork for creating a great course.
Step Two - Mapping
In this step, we plan out the course structure and align your content to your objectives. This ensures your course is focused, organised, and designed to create real outcomes for your students.
It’s easy to keep adding more and more content to a course, or to get waylaid from your original intentions – so a clear map helps us stay on track.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What’s the journey your students will take ... from where they are now to their desired outcome?
- How can you break that into clear, manageable sections?
- What should students know, feel, or be able to do?
- How will each module build on the one before it?
- What key topics, skills, or activities fit within each module?
- How long should each lesson be to keep learners engaged and avoid overwhelm?
- Does the content flow logically?
- What activities, reflections, or checkpoints do you need?

Step Three - Content
Here’s were we create valuable and engaging lessons. This isn’t just about death by PowerPoint or talking head videos… it’s about creating content that truly helps and keeps your students excited to learn.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What’s the content needed for each lesson?
- How can you break that into clear, manageable sections?
- Can you match the format to your learners’ needs?
- How can you make each lesson engaging and interactive?
- How will you keep students involved rather than just watching or reading?
- How can you make the content easy to follow?
- Are you using clear language and short segments?
- Have you added visuals, examples, or stories?
- Would templates, worksheets, or guides help them apply what they learn?
This stage of the course creation process takes time. Don’t rush through making good quality content.
Step Four - Tech
Let’s make the tech simple. This step is about setting up your course platform and making sure everything works smoothly, so you can focus on teaching, not troubleshooting. A seamless experience keeps your students engaged.
(If you’re making a face to face program – tech may still apply. Are you integrating videos into your lessons? What about interactive quizzes? How about tech to sending information before the course or following up afterwards?)
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What platform will work best for your course?
- Does it suit your course type, budget, and audience?
- Will it grow with you as your business expands?
- How confident are your students with technology?
- Wil they be able to log in, navigate, and complete lessons?
- What devices will they most likely use?
- What integrations do you need?
- Does it need to connect your course with your email marketing or payment systems?
- Are there automations that could save you time or improve the student experience?
This stage of the course creation process can feel like the most unknown and overwhelming.

Step Five - Review
The review stage is where we make a good course great. While you should always review your course before it goes live, it’s also important to schedule regular reviews for the future.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- How can you improve the student experience?
- Are instructions and navigation easy to follow?
- Do you need to update any materials, add captions, or improve accessibility?
- Do you need to provide tech support, tutorials, or onboarding guidance?
- Do all of the buttons, links and downloads work?
- What’s your plan for regular reviews?
- How often will you revisit your course to refresh or update it?
- Who else could help you review it objectively?
- What feedback or data can you use to measure success?

Step Six - Sell
A course is no good without students. Learning how to market and sell your course is an essential part of your course creation journey. When your course reaches the right people, everyone benefits.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Who is your ideal learner?
- Where can you find them?
- Which platforms, groups, or communities do they spend time in?
- What makes your course stand out or different from others available?
- How will you build trust with potential students before asking for the sale?
- What marketing activities will you use to reach your audience?
- What does your sales process look like, from first contact to checkout to onboarding?
If no one knows your course exists, then they can’t they can’t buy it. Don’t let all of your building efforts sit unused and unloved.
Step Seven - Support
Great courses aren’t passive, they’re supportive. Providing the right kind of support helps your students stay engaged, complete the course, and get results, which means better outcomes for them and better testimonials for you.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What kind of support will your learners need to stay motivated and on track?
- Will you offer live sessions, discussion forums, email support, or something else?
- How can you make students feel connected and part of a community, even in a self-paced course?
- How will you monitor learners and identify those who might be struggling?
- What feedback channels can you provide so students feel heard and supported?
- How will you celebrate learner milestones or success?
- Do you need to set clear boundaries or response times for your own availability?
Remember, when students get stuck, they stop learning (and often leave a course and don’t come back to it).
Look for different ways you can support your students along the way.
